Only a few weeks removed from the historic announcement of a Women’s United States Title, WWE have made history once again by introducing a women’s Intercontinental Title, last night on Monday Night Raw.

Apart from the NXT Women’s North American Title, which was unveiled in April during WrestleMania week, WWE have never had secondary titles for their women’s division. World Titles have been the only championships available while the men have had the likes of the Intercontinental, United States, European, Cruiserweight/Lightheavyweight and Hardcore.

While women have captured men’s titles in the past, such as Chyna winning the Intercontinental Title twice and Jacqueline capturing the Cruiserweight Title, they have never been rewarded with their own elevational titles below world championship gold.

Monday Night Raw General Manager Adam Pearce followed in the footsteps of his SmackDown counterpart Nick Aldis, last night (November 25) and revealed the new title belt in front of the live crowd in Glendale, Arizona. Pearce then announced that a tournament to crown the inaugural champion would kick off next week. The tournament for the women’s United States Title, meanwhile, is already underway, with Bayley, Chelsea Green and Michin all advancing to the semi-finals. One of Naomi, Elektra Lopez and Tiffany Stratton will join them there before the final is held at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 14.

The participants for the Women’s Intercontinental Title tournament have yet to be announced, as is the date of the final, championship deciding bout.
