- The series will be based on all seven on the best-selling books
- Casting call for main characters has had huge amount of applicants
- Shooting on the first season will begin in summer 2025

Big news for all Harry Potter fans – the hugely anticipated HBO series based on the iconic books will begin filming in summer 2025.
Summer schedule
A TV adaptation of the books – which were also made into eight movies – was first announced back in 2023. While it has taken some time to move the show forward, with production set to begin next year, things will start moving faster.
Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod – who worked together to great success on Succession – are signed up as writer and director respectively. In addition, Gardiner will be showrunner and executive producer. Mylod will also be an executive producer, as will JK Rowling, who wrote the original books.
Actor speculation
No casting details have been given yet. There have been open casting auditions to find actors to play Harry, Ron Weasley and Hermione Grainger. The response to the call for actors was huge, with 32,000 young people applying, according to Gardiner, as reported by Deadline. The call closed at the end of October, but there has been no word on when an announcement of the successful applicants will be made.
There has also been speculation about actors who could take adult roles in the show. Cillian Murphy has been linked with the role of Harry’s nemesis Lord Voldemort. Murphy himself is busy with 28 Years Later.
The new show will adapt each of the seven books in the series. But, as it is a series, it will be able to dive deeper into the wizarding world than the movies could. It hasn’t yet been confirmed if each series will cover one book – executives have talked of there being one seasons each year for 10 years, so some of the larger books could be split over two seasons.
When the show might debut on Max also hasn’t been confirmed. It is thought a date some time in 2026 or even 2027 is likely. Here is everything we know about the show.
