- Chris Evans initially bowed out at the end of Avengers: End Game
- His role in Avengers: Doomsday isn’t confirmed
- Evans recently appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine reprising pre-MCU role

When Steve Rogers passed on his shield to Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: End Game, we thought that was the last we’d see of Chris Evans in the MCU. It appears we were wrong.
Chris Evans MCU return
Deadline has reported that Evans, who played Captain America in multiple MCU films over more than a decade, is on board to play a role in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel has yet to comment on this story formally.
But what role Evans will play hasn’t been confirmed. It is thought Wilson – played by Anthony Mackie – will be returning as Captain America, so who Evans will be isn’t clear. He could return as Rogers, but, as Robert Downey Jr has proved, he could play a different character entirely. Downey Jr is taking on the role of iconic antihero Dr Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
Evans has already made one return to the MCU – although as a previous Marvel character. He had a cameo in this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, where he reprised his role as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, which he played in the Fox/Marvel version of the Fantastic Four in the noughties.
The Fantastic Four are set to debut in the MCU next July in Fantastic Four: First Steps. Evans is not playing Johnny Storm in that movie – Joseph Quinn is taking on that role. Here is what we know about the movie.
Rumored returns
Avengers: Doomsday, which is being directed by the Russo Brothers, is rumored to be lining up a return for many familiar characters from MCU films over recent years, including some of the original Avengers team, such as Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). It is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2026.
