The Far Cry franchise is venturing into uncharted territory, setting up to release not only one but two games that are currently in development— Far Cry 7 codenamed “Blackbird”, and a multiplayer game, codenamed “Maverick”.

A Race Against Time & Survival in Wildernes

Ubisoft is taking creative risks, aiming to bring new experiences with these games, unlike acting like a sheep and following the gaming trends blindly. These games, though distinct, share a common ambition: to challenge conventions and immerse players in survival-driven adventures like never before.

Far Cry 7’s story revolves around a protagonist who dives into a high-stake mission to rescue their family kidnapped by a sinister cult. It gives off the vibes of quite a gloomy and creepy storyline, as the cult is indulged in forbidden practices— conducting unethical experiments on animals.

The twist? You’ll have only 24 real-life hours (equivalent to 72 in-game hours) to complete your mission. This intense time constraint is a bold departure from the series’ usual open-world exploration style.

For in-game timing players can keep an eye on the character’s wristwatch, adding a constant reminder of the urgency. Far Cry 7 will also introduce a revamped gameplay system. Tactical sprinting, sliding, vaulting, and other advanced movement techniques.

Speaking of Maverick, a multiplayer game is about surviving against everything— other players, intolerable weather conditions, other players, wild animals, and an overall challenging environment.

A Revamped Gameplay Experience

The game mechanics have shifted towards being more real and intense, focusing on making players feel the idea of survival.  Ubisoft is developing both games using a new engine— Snowdrop engine.

This highlights developer’s efforts to modernize the franchise and adapting technological change by opting for a different engine other than Dunia.  As per Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, both games were originally set to be released in 2025 but now reported that the plan has been delayed to 2026.

However, with this two installment, Ubisoft is laying the foundation for its new journey and attempts to break away from its formulaic past. Although 2024 wasn’t kind to the company, still with higher aims and ambitions it can revive the lost charm.
