As 2024 draws to a close, Blizzard Entertainment has taken a moment to reflect on the phenomenal accomplishments and unforgettable moments from the past year. This year has been exceptional for the company and its extensive fanbase.

Player Stats with Touch of Comedy

While the stats shared are undoubtedly impressive, the playful comparisons also bring the element of humor. In a recent end-of-year post, Blizzard’s President, Johanna Faries, shared some mind-boggling stats that showcase just how much fans have been engaging with their beloved titles.

  • Upon mentioning the total played hours across all games and platforms— 8.34 billion hours or 924,055 years, the post says, “In that time a person could walk around the earth 1 million times.”
  • For more than 378 total sent messages on Battle.net, “If you spent 5 seconds reading each message, it would take 60 years of non-stop reading to finish them all”.
  • Another humorous remark for over 1.7 trillion all-time killing of demons, “That’s almost as many demons as there are domesticated honey bees on earth!”.
  • 4,500,000,000 spiders and Nerubians killed in World of Warcraft, “That number of spiders weigh around 100,000 lbs, which is the weight of a North Pacific blue whale”
  • Massive number of 4,000,000,000 Murlocs minions played in Hearthstone Battlegrounds, “That’s more murlocs than people in the U.S., China, India, and all of Europe combined.
  • 480 million total player deaths in Diablo Immortal, “Stack that many smartphones flat on top of each other, and you’d reach the highest layer of earth’s atmosphere at over 3700 kilometers.
  • Over 203 years played across the new clash maps; Hanaoka and Throne of Anubis, “ Enough time to fly to Neptune and back 8 times over”.

These funny statements and stats induced laughter along with the celebration of these milestones, highlighting the incredible dedication of Blizzard’s player base across multiple franchises. But it’s not just in-game statistics that Blizzard has been lauding over.

Blizzard’s Impact Beyond the Game

Johanna Faries shared the charity contributions, Overwatch 2 players raised the amount of $12.3 million, by buying the Pink Mercy skin, sent to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to assist in fighting breast cancer.

Similarly, players of Diablo 4 and World of Warcraft also offered money for these purposes. She said “On Earth Day, in true Diablo fashion, Duriel’s Offering raised over 666 buckets of maggots for Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital”.

Further mentioned, “WoW charity pet this year held special significance to all of us at Blizzard”, the money earned from selling this went to CureDuchenne, to help individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Despite facing some challenges, including layoffs and the tough reality of being part of a larger corporate structure post-Microsoft acquisition, Blizzard has remained focused on delivering new and exciting experiences.

Looking ahead, Blizzard has promised that 2025 will be another year filled with new adventures, innovations, and community-driven events. As Faries put it, “We are incredibly grateful for all of your support on these campaigns and so many other significant efforts throughout the year.”

Blizzard continues to unite people across the globe through the power of play and philanthropy. Here’s to another year of legendary moments ahead!
