The trailer for the 28 Days Later sequel 28 Years Later dropped a few weeks ago. Director Danny Boyle is returning, and in the trailer, you can spot clues about who the cast will be. In 28 Days Later, Cillian Murphy plays Jim, a bike courier at the center of the horror. He wakes up to find London overrun by zombies.

The first installment in the series was released in 2002. It introduced us to the harrowing virus that turned London into a zombie wasteland. The film made $82 million at the worldwide box office and was received well by critics.

Five years later, a standalone sequel, (not a great one at that), 28 Weeks Later was released. Eighteen years later, a 28 Days Later sequel will hit our screens, a direct one. If you weren’t excited enough, 28 Years Later will have a part 2, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

The sequels will be released six months apart. But when exactly will they be released? Let’s break it down.

28 Years Later release date

28 Years Later will be released on 20 June 2025 in the UK, USA, and Canada. The story will be a new one developed by Alex Garland and directed by Boyle. Anthony Dod Mantle will return as the cinematographer.

The release dates between both movies are so close because the 28 Years Later parts were shot back-to-back on iPhones. Back-to-back shooting means faster editing and less time in post-production, so we are happy about that.

As we’ve mentioned, Murphy will return. The film will also star notable UK actors, including Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The synopsis hasn’t been released yet, but Garland and Boyle had mapped out the story years ago.

In January 2024, the sequel announcement was made public. The Hollywood Reporter reported that Garland and Boyle may intend to make the new movie into a trilogy. Considering they are splitting 28 Years Later into two parts, they could release a sequel to this film to create a trilogy.

What happened in the 28 Days Later sequel trailer?

Sony Pictures released the trailer for the 28 Days Later sequel on December 10. It begins by recapping the outbreak’s start. A montage shows zombies attacking England, with days, weeks, and years passing as the outbreak stops and starts. We also see Aaron Taylor-Johnson, looking haggard and carrying a bow, possibly part of a post-apocalyptic camp.

One shot features what looks like a temple of bones, hinting at the significance of 28 Years Later part 2’s title.

The military presence from 28 Weeks Later seems to return. The trailer shows running, zombies, and jumpscares. The tagline ‘What will humanity become?’ hints at destruction beyond a zombie invasion. We’ll likely get more clues closer to the film’s release or in part 2.

When will 28 Years Later Part 2 be released?

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will be released on January 16, 2026, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Google. As we stated before, this will leave around six months between the release date of 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple.

Part 2 will be different, as Nia DaCosta directs instead of Boyle. Garland still writes the story, while Sean Bobbitt will do the cinematography.

Who will star in The Bone Temple?

Murphy and Taylor-Johnson are the only cast members confirmed for The Bone Temple. We expect more confirmations closer to the release date for part 2. Since it’s a zombie movie, characters from 28 Years Later might not survive long enough to cameo. But hey, we’re just speculating.

When will the trailer be released?

Since the release of The Bone Temple is over a year away, we don’t have a trailer yet. Maybe Sony will wait until we are closer to the film’s release. Considering they released the trailer for 28 Years Later this month, that leaves six months until it’s released. If Sony follows this pattern for The Bone Temple, they might release the trailer shortly after 28 Days Later’s release due to the six-month gap between each part.

While details remain unclear about the story, we know we will be in the theatre for the summer and winter blockbuster releases.
