Overwatch 2’s Falls Behind Marvel Rivals

While Overwatch 2 has long been praised and celebrated for its iconic roster and diverse gameplay style, the fast-paced hero shooter is leaving fans feeling left behind and they have started comparing both games.

An X user shared a post highlighting that, “Not Marvel Rivals adding the same amount of characters in one season that Overwatch adds over the span of a year”, reported by Gamerant.

Many users replied in favor of the tweet while others turned it down, one of them said that OW2 shouldn’t be compared with “Honeymoon Phase of Rivals”. Marvel Rivals released on December 6, 2024, has already taken the gaming world by storm.

Since then the developers have been adding characters without a pause, recently another leak hit the internet claiming the addition of new heroes, skins, maps, and more.

In contrast, Overwatch 2 has brought in just ten heroes since its release, sticking to a schedule of roughly one new hero every nine weeks. Fans, eager to lay their hand on fresh content are feeling overwhelmed due to this slower pace.

Comparing the Two

Why Overwatch 2 is only being compared with Marvel Rivals? Before the launch, the community noticed the similarity between these two games, calling Rivals a copy of OW2.

Let’s take a look at what these two share a lot. Both games: feature a roster of unique characters offering different abilities and involve team and objective-based gameplay.

Overwatch 2 brought forward its beloved roster from the first game while introducing heroes like Sojourn. It has shifted its style from a classic 6v6 to a 5v5 combat setup and brings seasonal updates including modes, events, and cosmetics.

On the other hand, Marvel Rivals is impressively expanding its character catalog, drawing players’ attention towards it. After the Twitter post, a feeling of envy developed among these gaming communities.

While Overwatch 2 remains a staple in the hero shooter genre, it faces hurdles as games like Marvel Rivals raise the bar and increase the players’ expectations. Although Blizzard is shaping OW2 in its own way to maintain the game’s legacy, still this new competition will inspire developers to rethink the hero release strategy.
