- Cult classic movie The Goonies turns 40 this year
- Rumors of a sequel have resurfaced again
- Original cast have talked about a sequel before

Cult classic kids movie The Goonies turns 40 this year and the prospect of there – finally – being a sequel to it has resurfaced, after years of rumors about it.
A report in Deadline about Warner Bros Discovery, which own the rights to the franchise, contained a line that has got fans excited, mentioning a Goonies treatment.
No other detail has been given, but it is enough to give fans renewed hope. But if a potential movie is only at the treatment stage, then it is very far away from arriving in theaters, and could well not progress any further than its current stage. But nevertheless the hope is there.
This isn’t the first time rumors about a new Goonies movie have surfaced recently. Back in September 2024, there were reports that a sequel was being talked about. However, back then, two of the stars of the original film cast doubt on the sequel rumors.
What was The Goonies about?
The Goonies focused on a group of friends in Oregon who try to save their homes from foreclosure and follow a treasure map to try and find a long-lost treasure – that leads them to danger.
It starred many who went onto be stars, such as Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin and Josh Brolin.
The movie was produced by Steven Spielberg and he has said he has periodically had conversations about a sequel, but has said that nothing has got off the ground as the idea hasn’t been as strong as the original.
40th anniversary celebrations
But fans of the film do have a treat in store coming soon. As The Goonies is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its theatrical release this year, then it will be returning to some theaters in the US, albeit briefly. Screenings will be on January 19 and 20 – check local listings for details.
Other events may be held in June, which marks the 40th anniversary of when it was released in theaters.
