- Disney confirmed in December it is producing a live-action version of Tangled
- Hawkeye star Florence Pugh is said to be favorite to play Rapunzel
- Sabrina Carpenter is also rumored to be in contention

Thunderbolts* star Florence Pugh is thought to be the frontrunner to land the role of Rapunzel in Disney’s live-action remake of Tangled – but others are in contention.
Last month, Disney confirmed that Tangled is the latest of its beloved animated films to get the live-action treatment. Tangled, released in 2010, has become a family favorite with its modern retelling of the Grimm fairytale.
Florence Pugh favorite
Since then, there has been plenty of speculation about who would take on the role of Rapunzel. Currently, it is rumored that Florence Pugh, who will star in Thunderbolts* later this year, is at the head of the queue for the role.
Disney insider Daniel Richman (via Toonado.com) has said Pugh is favorite. However, there has been internet speculation that pop superstar Sabrina Carpenter was also being considered for the role.
There is also speculation over who will take the Mother Gothel role, with Jennifer Lopez and Kathryn Hahn among the names mentioned.
However, this is all speculation currently. Disney, nor any of the stars mentioned or their agents, have said anything on the record about who may, or may not, be in negotiations to take on the role.
Michael Gracey – best known for directing The Greatest Showman – is in negotiations to direct the movie. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has written the most recent draft of the script.
While Disney hasn’t confirmed the plot of Tangled, from experience with similar live-action remakes by the House of Mouse it will likely follow that of the animated version. As yet, a release date hasn’t been confirmed either.
Pugh’s busy time
Pugh has been busy recently, starring in the drama We Live in Time with Andrew Garfield. The pair’s on-screen chemistry, along with the affection for each other they have shown in interviews, led to speculation that they could be more than just friends. However, speculation is all it seems to be – neither have been confirmed to be in relationships.
The English actress has also been filming Tunderbolts*, which is set to be released on May 2 – the second MCU film to be released in 2025. Pugh will play Yelena Belova, a member of the Thunderbolts* team who trained as a Black Widow.
