Streaming platform Twitch has reversed its decision to allow more adult content and nudity on its site after the site was inundated with artificial intelligence-generated content.
Last Wednesday (December 13) Twitch announced it was allowing ‘artistic nudity’ on its site, such as erotic dances, in response to protests from some streamers – although with certain restrictions. But on Friday, Twitch abandoned the policy after a flood of digitally created nude content was posted on the site.
In a statement, Twitch’s CEO, Dan Clancy, said: “Upon reflection, we have decided that we went too far with this change.”
It wasn’t just the slew of NSFW content that influenced the decision, Clancy added, there had also been concern from within the Twitch community about it. “Moving forward, depictions of real or fictional nudity won’t be allowed on Twitch, regardless of the medium,” he said.
Twitch had changed its policy to allow content such as ‘fictionalised (drawn, animated, or sculpted) fully exposed female-presenting breasts, and genitals or buttocks regardless of gender’ and this appears to be where much of the problems came from.
“Digital depictions of nudity present a unique challenge – artificial intelligence can be used to create realistic images, and it can be hard to distinguish between digital art and photography,” Clancy said.
