Continuing the Hollywood trend for sequels being made 25+ years later, a follow-up to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion in development.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that 20th Century Studios is moving ahead with a sequel and that original stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are in talks to return as the titular characters. It is also thought they will have executive producer roles too.

Tim Federle, who is probably best known for writing and directing Better Nate Than Never, is on board to direct. Meanwhile Robin Schiff, who wrote the original movie, is also scripting the sequel. However, as yet there are no details on when the film might start shooting, let alone make it into theaters.

What was the movie about?

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was released in 1997 and featured Sorvino and Kudrow as a pair of 29-year-olds returning to their old high school for a 10th anniversary reunion.

During their time in high school, Romy and Michele were bullied by the ‘A-group’ of popular, mean girls. This culminated in a mean trick that was played at prom on Romy by a boy she had a crush on.

Ten years on, Romy and Michele live in an apartment together, but, not wanting to look bad at the reunion due to their mediocre careers, they decided to fabricate how successful they were.

However, the plan goes wrong and they argue before they get to the reunion. At the reunion, it is revealed that most of the former A-group are either pregnant or already mothers. When Romy and Michele reconcile and decide to be themselves – in homemade outfits – the scene is set for their triumph.

The movie captured the times, as well as the music and fashions, which has helped it to remain a favorite for more than 25 years.
