With the current vogue for rebooting 1980s and 90s movie franchises attention has turned to a potential Back to the Future 4 – but fans will be disappointed.

Back to the Future – along with its two sequels – were huge movies in the 80s and early 90s. The story of a suburban teen who travels in time thanks to his eccentric friend’s adapted DeLorean car was a global hit.

The first movie, released in 1985, saw Marty McFly travel back to 1955 to try and stop a friend being killed – but inadvertently almost changes his own timeline in doing so. He then must ensure everything is back to how it should be to ensure his own future – and find a way back to 1985 too.

The sequel was released in 1989, with the final film in the trilogy released in 1990, which wrapped the story up. Although this is no barrier to future sequels – just look at Toy Story 4.

But now with many 80s moving receiving sequels or reboots, such as Beetlejuice and Gremlins, fans have been asking if there could be a Back to the Future 4.

However, fans are going to be disappointed. The creators of the movies have consistently said they have no plans to revisit Marty and Co.

Indeed, Bob Gale, who wrote and produced all three movies with franchise co-creator Robert Zemeckis, spoke about the topic, as reported by Yahoo Entertainment.

“People always say, ‘When are you going to do ‘Back to the Future 4’ and we say, ‘**** you,’” Gale said.

This rather blunt response echoes what others have said over the years about reuniting for another film.

Michael J Fox, who played McFly in the films, has spoken about not wanting to reprise his role again.

But this does not mean we have seen the last of Back to the Future. It has already become a Broadway musical, which is now set to tour the world after its initial success.

In addition, a stage production is being developed for Royal Caribbean Cruises. Cruises. “So, my God, ‘Back to the Future,’ I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life,” Gale added.

A new movie

However, there could be a new movie too at some point – but not a fourth in the franchise.

Zemeckis told the Happy Sad Podcast last year that a musical version could happen. “To remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a ‘Back to the Future 4,’ it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis added. “I would like to do the ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ [movie]. I would love to do that. I think that would be great.”

But Zemeckis added that it would need buy-in from a studio, which currently isn’t there.
