- Kendrick Lamar, along with Trey Parker and Matt Stone are collaborating on a new comedy
- The movie will be out on July 4 this year
- Movie is set to bring past and present issues to a head

Kendrick Lamar might be known for his rapping, but he is now branching out into movie production, teaming up with the duo behind South Park for a new feature.
The as-yet-untitled movie is a live-action comedy, and Matt Stone and Trey Parker – the brains behind long-running animated show South Park – and Lamar, alongside Dave Free in their PGLang company, are producing it.
Scant detail
There aren’t many confirmed details about the movie, other than that Parker is directing and Vernon Chatman – who has been a long-time writer and producer on South Park, as well as voicing Towelie – has written the script.
When the project was announced in 2022, a brief synopsis was given for the movie. It was said that it will depict past and present coming to a head when a young Black man who is interning as a slave reenactor at a living history museum discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors owned his. Given the lack of updates since, we assume this is still the plot.
Creating fireworks
The movie is slated for release on July 4 – which is of course Independence Day. Given the controversial nature of Parker and Stone’s earlier work, this is likely to be deliberately provocative.
When Paramount announced its release date last year, Paramount’s CEO, Brian Robbins, praised the movie, saying – as per Variety – “This script is one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read and its certain to generate some fireworks.”
The movie is the first that Lamar and Free’s PGLang company has been involved with. However, Parker and Stone are veterans of the industry. As well as South Park, which has been running for nigh on 30 years, they have also been involved with movies such as Team America: World Police (2004).
It isn’t the first time Parker, Stone, Lamar and Free have collaborated – the South Park duo developed the deepfakes used in Lamar’s video for The Heart Part 5 in 2022.
The movie could have a greater profile now as Lamar is one of the biggest rappers on the planet, cemented by his half-time show at the 2025 Super Bowl. Here are the best reactions to that.
