Britney Spears has taken to Instagram to deny rumours that she was planning to record a new album, adding that she will never return to the music industry.
Various outlets in the US and UK carried rumours that Spears, 40, was planning to record her 10th studio album and was sourcing collaborators for it. In addition, Rolling Stone quoted an unnamed source claiming that “management and A&R are trying to get her excited for the music.”
However, the star, probably best known for her first hit ‘Baby One More Time’ nearly 25 years ago, took to Instagram to vehemently deny this. “Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash!!!” she wrote. “They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album … I will never return to the music industry!!!”
Spears did add that she was still writing songs, but was happy to work purely as a ghostwriter for other artists.
Her fans had been hopeful of hearing new music from Spears after she released a duet with Elton John in August 2022, after she had been released from the conservatorship that had controlled her life in 2021. She also released a single with rapper will.i.am in July 2023.
However, Spears now appears to have conclusively ruled out a return to the music industry. She released her autobiography, The Woman in Me, in October last year, which has sold more than 2.4 million copies worldwide.
