Beloved Disney Pixar animated film WALL-E has been voted as the film that most people would like to see a sequel of.
In a poll of members of Pubity’s broadcast channel, WALL-E came out on top, followed by another from the Disney Pixar canon, 2009’s Up. Sci-fi thriller Inception came third, followed by action horror flick World War Z and the big-screen remake of 60s TV series The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
WALL-E, which was released in 2008, tells the story of the last robot left on a deserted, uninhabitable Earth in 2805, who is slowly cleaning the world up. When a robot from the starship Axoim, named EVE, visits Earth to see if there are signs of life, WALL-E meets her and falls in love, before pursuing her across the galaxy. When it was released, it took more than $520 million at the box office.
However, despite the clamour it seems that fans might not get their wish. In August 2023, CinemaBlend reported that Pixar’s president Jim Morris said the company had chosen against making WALL-E 2 as they believed it was “really a love story that had its beginning, middle and end” and couldn’t find another story to fit into that universe again.
The only film on that list that may be getting a sequel is 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E, with director Guy Ritchie and star Henry Cavill believed to be on board, although nothing official has been confirmed by any production company.
Sadly, it seems there is little chance of any of any of the other top five films getting sequels. In Inception’s case, director Christopher Nolan doesn’t to sequels to original ideas. While there were plans for a World War Z 2 – which would have been similar in idea to the TV series The Last of Us – and star Brad Pitt was said to be on board to reprise his role, those were canned last year.
Finally, it seems there are no plans for a full sequel to Up, but there has been a series of six short films, called Dug Days, as well as a short called ‘Carl’s date’, which accompanied the release of Elemental last year.
