With an impressive cast that includes Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise and Jonathan Bailey, fans are set for a fresh take on the story, but also its dinosaurs.
New velociraptor design
The terrifying velociraptor, best remembered for creeping around the kitchen in the franchise’s original 1993 film, is returning with an updated appearance.
As seen on a balloon design advertised by LA Balloons, the new design shows the predator looking more deadly than ever before. The dinosaur now features bright color markings and a more defined skull compared to its predecessors. It also has quills running along the back of its head and neck and its eyes appear beadier.
The velociraptors have seen multiple design changes throughout the years. While the changes are subtle, the dinosaurs do look distinctly different when compared to one another. They appear as completely brown raptors in the first film, but are brightly colored in The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). According to news sources, the colorful versions are males.
In Jurassic Park III (2001), the raptors have more color schemes. The upper half of their bodies are colored purple with stripes. The males of these raptors had quills on the top of their heads – something fans are quick to point out resembles the latest raptor look.
In Jurassic World (2015), each raptor has their own unique personality and appearance. This includes a raptor named Blue, who has a bright blue stripe running from her eye all the way to the tip of her tail. Blue would become the first recurring velociraptor character returning in both Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022).
What are fans saying about the redesign?
In recent films, velociraptors are made out to be allies to the humans, with Chris Pratt’s character, Owen, forming a close bond with them. But with the harsher features included in apex predators’ latest look, we can expect only danger. What do the fans think of the new look raptors?
@KillianHough appreciates the thought that’s gone into the design, noting it includes design features from all previous raptors. “I love how it’s obviously a combination of the previous raptor designs.
Dark blue with feathers on head – JP3
Orange and tiger stripes – TLW
A brownish grey coloring overall – JP”
@emilysclone kept her review simple and to the point, with “As long as they aren’t covered in feathers, I’m happy.”.
Meanwhile, @PlatinumWhisper is reserving judgement until they’ve seen the film, “I need to see how they look in the film before I make a judgment, but I like this design so far. It reminds me of the JP3 raptors which I always thought looked very cool and menacing.”

@NicWhit54401386 is tying the design to Blue, saying “it’s pretty cool it almost makes me want to theory that this raptor is where blue came from”.
Whereas @Jakeells66 is upset to see it has no fur, commenting “I thought it had short fur when I first saw it and tbh, I’m upset it doesn’t. I know that’s not scientifically accurate, but it would be cool.”
Jurassic World Rebirth opens in theaters on 2 July, 2025.
