Good news for Star Wars fans – a Mandalorian movie is set to come to cinema screens, following official confirmation that a film will go into production later this year.

The official Star Wars account on X (formerly Twitter) announced that the Mandalorian and Grogu are heading to the big screen, with Jon Favreau – who created the Mandalorian TV series – on directing duties. Favreau is also producing the film, alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni.

The Mandalorian has been an immensely successful series in the Star Wars universe since it debuted in 2019. It started five years after the events in Return of the Jedi (the sixth chapter of Star Wars) and tells the story of Din Djarin, who is part of the Mandalorian race of warriors. On his travels he encounters Grogu – colloquially known as Baby Yoda – and, on finding out that the Empire want to kidnap him, decides to protect him.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.
