Aerial action fans – buckle up! It has been confirmed that a third instalment of the Top Gun franchise is in the works with Tom Cruise set to again reprise his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.
The Hollywood Reporter says plans are underway to complete the trilogy of Top Gun films, with Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote 2022’s Top Gun 2 with Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie, currently penning the script.
Plans for Top Gun 3 have been worked on since late last year apparently with Cruise and co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell all set to return – although this has yet to be confirmed. Although Teller did let slip he’d ‘had conversations’ with Cruise about reuniting for Top Gun 3 way back in 2022. Joe Kosinski, who directed Top Gun 2, is also being lined up to return.
It should come as no surprise that a third movie in the franchise is planned, given the 2022 film grossed $1.5 billion worldwide at the box office at a time when numbers of people going to the cinema was still significantly down following the COVID pandemic.
But exactly when Top Gun 3 will hit screens has not been mentioned – and it could be some time before we get to see Maverick back in the danger zone. For one thing, Cruise is busy with other projects currently, not least the eighth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, which is expected to be released in the summer of next year, as well as projects for Warner Bros, with whom he has recently signed a contract, so he will have to find a window to film it.
But the wait shouldn’t be as long as it was between the first and second instalments of Top Gun – which was a whopping 36 years. Well, at least we hope it won’t be as long…
