In pretty seismic sequel news emerging from Pixar, it has been announced that Coco 2 is officially in the works.

The two-time Academy Award winning phenomenon, directed by Lee Unkrich and written by Adrian Molina and Matthew Aldrich, soared past $800m at the box office back in 2017 and has remained one of Pixar’s most beloved creations ever since.

Now, the animation studio have officially announced that a sequel will be released, although we won’t see it for a few years, yet.

The original Coco followed 12-year-old Miguel and his accidental adventure to the Land Of The Dead. While on the other side, Miguel attempts to reverse his family’s ban on music with the aid of his deceased great-great-grandfather. At the 90th Academy Awards, in 2018, Coco scooped Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Remember Me.

Now, a sequel, helmed by Unkrich and Molina as director and co-director, is on its way. Naturally, due to the extremely early nature of proceedings, there is not much in the way of detail available, but here is everything we know so far about Coco 2.

When is Coco 2 released?

Coco 2 will hit theatres in 2029, although an actual date is yet to be confirmed. The original film was released around Día de Muertos – the Mexican Day of the Dead – at the end of October and then in the US on November 22, 2017. Should the concept for the sequel prove to be in the same ballpark, it’s probably a safe bet to expect a similar release date in four years time.

Who is in Coco 2?

No cast members have been announced but the original cast featured Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel, Gael Garcia Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries, Babel) as Miguel’s great-great grandfather Hector, Benjamin Bratt (Blood In Blood Out, Miss Congeniality) as Ernesto De La Cruz, Alanna Ubach (Legally Blonde, Meet The Fockers) and Edward James Olmos (Miami Vice, Blade Runner).

Who is Directing Coco 2?

As previously mentioned, Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina are serving as director and co-director, with Mark Nielsen producing.

What is the Plot of Coco 2?

No plot details have been divulged as of yet, but with four years to go until its release, we imagine they won’t start to emerge any time soon.

Coco 2 joins the likes of Toy Story 5 and The Incredibles 3 as major sequels Pixar currently has in the works for release over the next few years.
