The live-action version of Snow White finally hits theaters today, and one of the stars is Andrew Burnap who plays Jonathan – but who is he?

The live-action version of the Disney classic Snow White has had mixed reviews ahead of its debut in theaters, as well as its share of controversy over the choice of Rachel Ziegler to play the titular role and how the seven dwarves are realised – although there has also been praise too. The story has also been updated to reflect modern audience tastes.

Jonathan in Snow White

Burnap plays Jonathan in Snow White, one of the main characters and Snow White’s love interest.

Jonathan is a new character created for this movie. He is partially based on the Prince from the original animated film, and he is a rebel against the Evil Queen’s monarchy.

Who is Andrew Burnap

This is Burnap’s first starring role in a major movie. His only previous starring role was in last year’s psychological horror film The Front Room. This was only a small film, grossing just $3.8 million at the box office. In The Front Room, Burnap played Norman, the husband of the main protagonist, Belinda.

Burnap’s voice could be well known to video games fans. In 2018, he voiced the character of Laramies in Red Dead Redemption 2.

On television, Burnap appeared in single episodes of several shows including Instinct and The Good Fight, before in 2022 playing the role of Phil in six episodes of WeCrashed, the Apple TV+ show based on the rise and fall of WeWork.

Burnap also played Joseph Smith in five episodes of the 80s-set crime drama Under the Banner of Heaven, which starred Andrew Garfield and streamed on FX on Hulu.

Star of stage

But while Burnap might not be a big star of the big or small screen – until now – he does have a big reputation on the stage.

Indeed, in 2020 he won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Play for his role as Toby Darling in The Inheritance. He also won a Clive Barnes Award for the same role. Burnap played the role from 2018-20 at three different venues.

Burnap has also had starring roles as King Arthur in Camelot (2023) and this year has played Cassio in Othello on Broadway.
