- Season two ending has shocked fans
- Season three was confirmed by Apple TV+ after finale aired
- Stiller said the series has been leading to the final moment of season two

The Severance season two finale has left the mouths of fans well and truly agape. And now Ben Stiller has explained the reasoning behind it.
As fans of the Apple TV+ psychological sci-fi drama emoted all over social media about the merriment and choreography filled finale, director Stiller was explaining to Deadline how we had managed to arrive at the jaw dropping final moments of the sophomore season, in which Adam Scott’s Mark S is SPOILER ALERT left in turmoil at escaping with his outie wife or returning to his innie life in the Lumon office with Helly R.
Severance Season Two Finale – Where Did That Come From?
“That was the track that — since the beginning — the series has been leading to on an emotional relationship level. Innie Mark has his own life. Outie Mark has his own life. Outie Mark, we meet first in terms of understanding what he wants, but then over the course of the first and second season, innie mark is living his life and developing these emotional attachments and relationships in his life that are very valid.
“These two characters are at odds because [outie Mark] getting his wife out is going to basically end innie Mark’s whole existence. And isn’t he a person? And isn’t Helly a person? It’s this inevitable confrontation that has to happen between the two of them. The hope is that the audience is, in some way, split or feeling like some people are like, ‘Yeah, I’m Team Innie Mark’ and, ‘I’m Team Outie Mark,’. “It’s a real conflict.”
In the same interview with Deadline, series creator Dan Erickson added, “I think there’s no easy answer to that question in terms of what it transcends, and it may be different for different people. In the case of Irving and Bert, we see that there is something that transcends, whether it’s some sort of instinctual memory of the love that they had, or if it’s just that they are both intrinsically, the same people as their innies, and that they would tend to be drawn to each other.
“There, we see [that] it does seem to cross over. With Mark and Gemma, we see the inverse of that, which is, as he’s looking at her, part of it would be easier if he did feel love for this woman and if he could fulfill the mission that he’s sort of had since the beginning of the season, which is to save her.”
Severance Season Two is Dead. Long Live Severance Season Three
Apple TV+ today confirmed that, following the monumental success of Severance season two, the show would be returning for a third season, mirroring Stiller’s words from late last year and during a recent appearance on the Kelce brothers’ New Heights podcast.
“You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it,” Stiller told Collider in November 2024.
“That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, ‘Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.’
“It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our Season three work.”
After much rumour-mongering, Apple finally went ahead and hit the green light on the third season earlier today.
