Fans of eccentrically designed visuals, immaculately developed cinematography, deadpan dialogue delivery and Bill Murray, you are about to be very excited indeed. The trailer for Wes Anderson’s latest project, The Phoenician Scheme, is set to drop this week.

The film will be Anderson’s 13th motion picture, following on from the likes of The Royal Tenenbaums (starring the recently departed Gene Hackman), The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Rushmore and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

A first official trailer is set to be released this week. As always, a large, star studded ensemble cast will feature, with many of Anderson’s longstanding collaborators on board. The Phoenician Scheme has been developed from a script Anderson wrote with Roman Coppola. The duo have worked together on multiple projects, dating back to 2007’s The Darjeeling Limited. Coppola co-wrote Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and helped with the story for Isle of Dogs (2018), The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023).

But what is The Phoenician Scheme all about? Who (apart from Bill Murray, obviously) is in it? And when is it hitting cinemas? Here’s everything you need to know…

Is there a trailer?

The first trailer for The Phoenician Scheme dropped in early April and gave us our first look at Michael Cera making his Anderson debut.

Elsewhere, the teaser provided a better look at the director’s latest. Del Toro plays a bad dad who’s determined to fix his relationship with his daughter. Sadly, that’s easier said than done.

Watch it above.

What is the Plot of The Phoenician Scheme?

The Phoenician Scheme has been described by Anderson as a “three-hander” adventure and will be a espionage tale involving a father-daughter relationship. More details about the plot have been pretty tight-knit, although more will likely be revealed in the upcoming trailer. Anderson revealed the script had been written before the Actors and Writers strikes of 2023.

Cast

Benicio del Toro will take the leading role as Zsa-zsa Korda. Del Toro will reportedly feature in every shot of the film and was the first actor attached to the project. Mia Threapleton, daughter of Kate Winslet, will star as Sister Liesl with Michael Cera taking on the role of Bjorn Lund and Tom Hanks returning for a second Anderson project (following his role in Asteroid City), playing the character Leland.

Bill Murray has received his usual casting, although his role is as-yet-undefined. Bryan Cranston will play Reagan, while Riz Ahmed is Prince Farouk. Scarlett Johansson, another Asteroid City alumni, is also set to feature, as is Rupert Friend (as Exceliber), Benedict Cumberbatch (as Uncle Nubar), Willem Dafoe, Hope Davis, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Release Date

The Phoenician Scheme is set for a limited theatrical release on May 30, 2025 before a wider release arrives a week later on June 6, 2025.
