Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae has his wits put to the test in a new Perplexity AI advert poking fun at traditional search engines. 

The South Korean actor plays Seong Gi-hun, the reluctant hero of Netflix’s hit thriller series. In Perplexity AI’s new commercial, he’s placed back into familiar territory and faced with a series of Squid Game-esque challenges.

To overcome them, Jung-jae must rely on the quick-wit of Perplexity AI. This new search engine tool uses artificial intelligence to generate answers to popular queries. 

The advert begins with the star wrapping up a scene. Soon, he finds himself trapped in a corridor with colorful lighting reminiscent of the type used in his Netflix show. 

A computer screen descends from the ceiling. It tells Jung-jae that he must complete a challenge – one that involves answering three questions.

With the temperature suddenly dropping, Jung-jae must figure out how to get coffee stains out of a white shirt. Opening his smartphone, he’s met with a search engine named ‘Poogle’ – an obvious dig at another mega-search engine with a very similar name.

Finding no quick answers in the links it provides, Jung-jae turns to Perplexity AI for his answers which he gets in the form of a spoken response. 

The app helps Jung-jae complete his challenge – with the final question directly referencing his Squid Game success.  

What is Perplexity AI?

Perplexity AI is search engine that uses artificial intelligence to answer questions and queries from users across the world. It was developed by a team in San Francisco and has been linked to a merger with the social media giant TikTok. 

Jung-jae’s appearance in this advert comes as little surprise. 

According to TechRadar, Perplexity have recently entered into a year-long partnership with Artists united – a company that is co-owned by the Netflix star.

Perplexity AI’s new advert also coincides nicely with the impending release of season 3 which hits Netflix on 27 June 2025. 

Directed by series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, this final batch of episodes will reunite audiences with the show’s hero Gi-hun after a nail biting season 2 conclusion.

The show was filmed back-to-back with season 2 and is expected to be end the series for good. That said, rumor has it that an American remake is currently in the works, with American auteur filmmaker David Fincher at the helm.
