Gwyneth Paltrow was slammed by a former Channel 4 boss for her remarks about intimacy coordinators. The 52-year-old is starring alongside Timothée Chalamet in the upcoming sports comedy-drama Marty Supreme. The movie involves intimate scenes between Paltrow and Chalamet, which have been the subject of debate as Chalamet is 23 years younger than Paltrow.

However, Paltrow’s comments in a Vanity Fair interview about intimacy coordinators were what drew criticism. Also, there were a paparazzi shot of the two kissing passionately from the set, which didn’t help matters.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s intimacy coordinator comments

Paltrow teased that she and Chalamet have a “lot” of intimate scenes in the movie. “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,” Paltrow told the media outlet. The 52-year-old went on to say the intimacy coordinator asked her if she was comfortable doing something in a certain scene. Paltrow responded, “Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.”.

But this wasn’t Paltrow’s controversial comment. It was when she told Vanity Fair that she and Chalamet asked the intimacy coordinator to step back. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back.’ I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but…if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here,’  I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that,” Paltrow said.

Paltrow’s remarks were deemed “irresponsible” by Caroline Hollick, the former drama boss at Channel 4. Find out what Hollick said here.

The former Channel 4 boss said at the drama festival Series Mania that Paltrow’s comments were “irresponsible”. She was speaking on a panel, Let’s Talk About Sex! (And Consent).

Hollick confirmed she found Paltrow’s comments about coming from a time when actors would take their clothes off and do the job problematic. She continued, “As a powerful woman in Hollywood acting with a man much younger than her, well, I’m sure [Chalamet] is chill, but I thought it was quite an irresponsible thing to say”.

On why intimacy coordinators are important, Hollick said They are there to fight for actors and advocate for them. Because producers, writers, and directors can “have an agenda”, the presence of intimacy coordinators is needed to protect actors, she says.

Paltrow hasn’t commented on Hollick’s statement yet, but stay tuned to find out if she does.
