Nintendo confirmed the news on Friday 28 March via their Nintendo Today! app. The new feature will be directed by Wes Ball, the same filmmaker behind the Maze Runner movie trilogy.

In recent years, Ball has also been at the cutting edge of visual effects, using them to deliver the latest instalment of the Planet of the Apes franchise, 2024’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

At the moment, not much else is known about Nintendo’s long-awaited film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda. The character is among the console’s most popular characters, with games going right the way back to 1986’s The Legend of Zelda.

According to Deadline, Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto will be producing the film, alongside Avi Arad, formerly of Marvel Studios. The project is being written by Derek Connolly, the same scribe behind 2015’s Jurassic World.

While each Zelda game typically features a different format and art style, its core storyline remains the same.

This follows the elf-like hero Link, a hero of Hyrule who must embark on an adventure across this ancient and sprawling land to defeat an ancient evil, usually depicted as a character named Ganon.

Along the way, Link is usually required to befriend and assist a number of different townsfolk from a range of colorful backgrounds. From the volcanic Gorons to leafy forest dwellers and tribes under the water and high above the skies.

If he succeeds, he’ll save the game’s titular heroine, Princess Zelda.

Will The Legend of Zelda movie be live-action?

According to reports, Ball’s take on The Legend of Zelda will be a live-action adaptation and not animated.

Previously, Nintendo found great success with 2023’s animated The Super Mario Bros: Movie. Here, the games icon was brought to life with the help of Chris Pratt.

Meanwhile, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day voiced his brother Luigi, with Jack Black playing Bowser and Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Princess Peach.
