In this colorful land, anything you can dream is buildable… as long as you use cuboid blocks. Soon, Steve becomes an expert minor. However, his time in the Overworld is disrupted when a new group of people are transported to his blocky domain.

Directed by Napoleon Dynamite helmer Jarred Hess, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jason Momoa, The White Lotus star Jennifer Coolidge, Orange is the New Black’s Danielle Brooks and Family Switch actress Emma Myers.

Meanwhile, comedians Matt Berry, Kate McKinnon and Jemaine Clement lend their vocal talents to Hess’s video-game world.

The short answer is no – A Minecraft Movie is not a musical.

That said, there are a few reasons why fans have started to wonder whether Hess’s film could be considered something that fits into this particular genre.

For starters, Black – someone known for making and releasing his own music – has debuted a new song that promotes the film.

I Feel Alive is an original song that was written by Black that features on the soundtrack for A Minecraft Movie.

The song features lyrics that pay homage to the world-building hook of this video game adaptation. “I move mountains with my mind,” sings Black. Later, he references the movie’s bad guys by saying “I don’t wanna be running from zombies for the rest of our lives.”

Elsewhere, Foo Fighters frontman and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl plays drums on the song, with Queens of the Stoneage guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen, and Jellyfish musician Roger Joseph Manning Jr. on keyboards.

Meanwhile, Barbie soundtrack producer Mark Ronson plays both bass and rhythm guitar on the track.

This isn’t the first time Black has found musical inspiration from his film roles. In 2023, the School of Rock actor released the song Peaches which promoted his performance as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Promotional songs aside, the film features a soundtrack written by Mark Mothersbaugh, an American musician who shot to fame as part of the iconic new wave band Devo in the early 1970s.

His work on the film’s soundtrack is said to include specific references to the Minecraft game series. In particular, Mothersbaugh incorporated elements of ambient video game music producer C418.
