The first trailer for The Phoenician Scheme has dropped, giving us our first look at Michae Cera’s debut role in a Wes Anderson movie.

Cera plays Bjorn Lund, a curly haired tutor of Sister Liesel, played by Mia Threapleton.

Leisel is the estranged daughter of Benicio del Toro’s Zsa-zsa Korda, a rich European with many children, only one of which is female.

After surviving a plane wreck, he’s determined to reconnect with his daughter but things aren’t that easy. His route to becoming a better father are disrupted by Cera’s Lund, someone who boasts an accent that’s just as unique as his aesthetic.

The trailer for Anderson’s latest shows us more of the stuff we’ve come to expect from the director. Primarily, these include the exploits of eccentric bad father figures and exquisitely framed shots filled with deadpan humour.

As with many of Anderson’s movies, The Phoenician Scheme features an all-star cast. Joining del Toro, Cera and Threapleton are the likes of Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Wright, Riz Ahmed and Hope Davis.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe also star.

Yes, Bill Murray is set to star in The Phoenician Scheme although details of his character have yet to be revealed.

The film will mark Murray’s ninth collaboration with Anderson. Together, the pair struck up a bond while filming 1998’s Rushmore and the Ghostbuster’s star has been a regular sight in Anderson’s subsequent work.

Murray was set to appear in 2023’s Asteroid City but was forced to pull out at the last minute.

When is Wes Anderson’s new film released?

The Phoenician Scheme is set to hit cinemas on 30 May 2025. A week later the film will get a wider release, hitting cinemas across the United States and beyond from 6 June.

The movie is Anderson’s eleventh feature film and follows 2023’s Asteroid City which also starred Johansson and Hanks.

In between, the director helmed a trio of shorts based on Roald Dahl stories. These were released directly onto Netflix in 2024.
