A Minecraft Movie may have only been in theatres a matter of days, but the Jack Black led video game adaptation is building on its massive success, day by day.

Mixed reviews from the critics have not slowed down the Minecraft juggernaut, which pulled in a jaw dropping $301 million global opening, with roughly $144 million of that coming from the international box office.

The film’s astonishing success has seen it rapidly rise to number four spot on the list of highest grossing films of 2025 so far, in less than a week. Not only that, but Minecraft’s $300 million shattering performance this past weekend makes it the second biggest debut for a video game adaptation ever, behind only Super Mario Bros from 2023.

A Minecraft Movie – The Hero the Box Office Needed in 2025

As if those two little nuggets weren’t impressive enough, in like-for-like markets and using today’s exchange rates, Minecraft is (via Deadline) tracking over Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (+228%), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (+75%), Pokemon: Detective Pikachu (+61%), Sonic 3 (+60%), Kung Fu Panda 4 (+44%), Jumanji: The Next Level (+31%).

In terms of Imax numbers, Minfecraft is the best release in the format, with $19.4 million in global takings, since Deadpool & Wolverine, last year.

As far as Europe is concerned, A Minecraft Movie – which stars the aforementioned Jack Black as well as Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Danielle Brooks and Matt Berry – is the biggest drawing release of 2025 so far, Momoa’s biggest opening ever and second best for Black.

Building Towards a Sequel?

A Minecraft Movie has also beaten a record set in 2023 by Blumhouse’s horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s, by taking $10.55 million in previews, beating the previous record of $10.3 million, according to Deadline. Super Mario Bros didn’t have previews because it opened on a Wednesday, rather than the Friday that A Minecraft Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s did. And when you delve into the history of the numbers associated with the movie’s opening, it becomes even more staggering.

Per Deadline, “Rounding out the Top 10, Poland ($6.2M) is on track for the biggest industry opening of all time in both box office and admissions. In Brazil ($5.8M) Minecraft had the biggest opening of 2025 to date. Spain ($5.6M) scored the biggest 3-day opening weekend for a video game adaptation and for a Jack Black title, the best for Jason Momoa and tops for WB since 2012’s The Hobbit. France ($5.6M) gave the Jared Hess-helmed movie the best start for a U.S. title this year and outpaced most comps. Italy ($5.3M) had the second best launch for a video game adaptation ever.

“Elsewhere, Iceland had the biggest opening ever for a WB film, and may top Spider-Man: No Way Home as the biggest industry opening of all time.”

With the phenomenal success of the Jared Hess directed flick taking Hollywood and the wider world by storm at the box office, a sequel is already naturally being discussed. While nothing has been announced at the time of writing, Hess has expressed interest in directing a follow up.
