Wicked would have been incredibly well-received by Judy Garland, according to her daughter Lorna Luft. The late Hollywood legend starred as Dorothy Gale in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, from which the Broadway musical took great inspiration. Based on the book by Frank

Speaking to PEOPLE magazine about the 2024 film starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ervio, Luft said, “She would’ve loved it.”

When asked what particular songs from Stephen Schwartz score her mother would have enjoyed, the 72-year-old replied,  “I have no idea. But she would’ve loved it.”

Garland died at age 47 in 1969 after battling substance issues. The beloved actress, who was and still is an LGBT icon, experienced a vast array of abuse while working as a child actress in Hollywood’s Golden Age.

The Jon M. Chu film adapted the first act of the 2003 musical, which tells the story of the future Wicked Witch, Elphaba (Eviro,) moving to Shizz University, meeting Glinda the Good Witch and all the other characters who appear in the 30s original.

It took home nearly $740,000,000 at the box office, making it one of the most profitable titles of the year.

The musical, which fills in many of the gaps left by The Wizard of Oz, is based on the book of the same name by Gregory Maguire.

Along with Eviro and Grande, it starred Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode and Bowen Yang.
