A modern interpretation of the horror classic Carrie is coming to Amazon soon, with Summer H Howell reportedly in line for the starring role – but who is she?
A series of Carrie was reported to be in development at Amazon last October, but it is only this week that it has been officially greenlit by the streaming giant for an eight-episode series.
Mike Flanagan is writer, executive producer and showrunner on the new series, and will also direct some of the episodes.
Carrie – reimagining of the original story
Carrie will be based on the original 1974 book by Stephen King, although the series logline – according to Variety – says it is a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public high school, a bully scandal that shatters her community, and the emergency of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
Flanagan has worked on several famous King works in the past, including Doctor Sleep – the sequel to The Shining – Gerald’s Game and The Life of Chuck.
But who will be playing Carrie? Several sources say that rising star Summer H Howell is in talks to take on the role. But who is she?
Summer H Howell – well versed in horror
Howell, who is 20, is a rising star in the acting world – and is already well steeped in the horror genre.
When she was just eight, she appeared as Alice in 2013’s Curse of Chucky, which was written and directed by Don Mancini. This was the sixth instalment in the Child’s Play franchise and was released direct to video. Four years later she reprised that role in Cult of Chucky
In 2020, Howell starred in horror thriller Hunter Hunter, about a family of fur trappers living in the Canadian wilderness. She played Renee, the daughter of the family who meets an untimely end.
Last year, Howell starred in Spirit in the blood, a horror thriller about a group of teenage girls who fight back against evil spirits they believe killed their friend.
Howell has appeared in movies that aren’t horror too. In 2023, she was one of the leads in the Prime Video movie Abducted by my Teacher, which told the story of 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas’ 36-day ordeal after she was groomed and kidnapped by one of her teachers.
