The explosive finale of Daredevil: Born Again provided plenty of twists, shocks and answers – and has neatly set the scene for the upcoming Punisher special.

All season long, fans have been wondering when Frank Castle – better known as The Punisher – would make his appearance in Daredevil: Born Again. While they may have had to wait until the season finale, it was well worth it.

And, for those who waited until the post-credit scene, they also have the set-up for the Punisher special too.

The Punisher one-shot special

Fans already knew that a Punisher special is in the works. Disney announced back in February that Jon Bernthal would reprise his role as Frank Castle/The Punisher in the special, which he is also co-writing alongside We Own The City director Reinaldo Marcus Green.

Marvel’s head of television, Brad Winderbaum, was enthusiastic about the special at the time of the announcement. “It’s like a shotgun blast of a story, but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story,”

But little has been said about what the plot of the special will be. However, thanks to the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again, we now have an idea.

Fair warning: spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again season finale

Daredevil: Born Again sets up one-shot

In the season finale, with Matt Murdock/Daredevil in mortal danger, he returns home to find The Punisher is already there. He reveals he had a call telling him to meet Matt.

Soon after, Wilson Fisk/Kingpin’s task force breaks into Matt’s apartment, but the two fight them off and they escape through a window, where there is a well-placed car waiting below containing the also-returning Karen Page, who was last seen in early in the season.

Later, Punisher goes to meet his fans, but things take an ugly turn and he is captured and imprisoned. While there, he is offered the chance to join Kingpin’s side – one that he rejects vehemently.

While it all may look bleak for the anti-hero, if you hang around until after the credits roll, you get to see him again – and how he manages to regain his freedom, ready to wreak havoc in his own special.

No release date has yet been announced for The Punisher special, but we know that it will air before Daredevil: Born Again season 2 arrives. Filming is currently underway for season 2, and it is thought it will be shown on Disney+ in roughly a year’s time as they want to capitalise on the momentum of the show, rather than have a years-long gap between seasons as some other shows have. Therefore, the special can be expected sometime in the next 12 months.
