Netflix has confirmed how the Heartstopper story will end.
After the third season aired in October 2024, fans have waited on tenterhooks to hear about the future of the show. As the wait dragged on, they became uneasy over whether it would get renewed.
Added to this, creator Alice Oseman has been busy with the sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series that was the basis of the show. She maintained that she had wanted it to come out before what was presumably the final volume of the series.
Interestingly, the story won’t conclude with a fourth season, but with a feature-length film.
Why did it take so long to confirm the series’ future?
In February, Oseman said she was working “really hard” to try and make another instalment happen. She later acknowledged that there were “lots of moving parts” making series renewal harder.
Many fans thought she was referring to Locke and Connor’s availability becoming more scarce. After all, both actors have enjoyed enormous success since appearing in the show’s first season in 2022. Notably, Locke has appeared in Marvel’s Agatha All Along while Connor has had roles in the likes of The Wild Robot and Warfare. He also starred opposite Rachel Zegler in a Broadway production of Romeo and Juliet.
What’s the Heartstopper film about?
Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) are growing up. Nick has left for university, meaning their relationship has to go long-distance with Charlie left behind to finish his last year of school. Can their love survive?
Oseman will write the script, while Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette) will direct. Locke and Connor also have credits as executive producers.
“I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story,” Oseman said in a statement.
“I’m so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion.”
Filming will begin in the summer.
What happened in the last season?
Heartstopper took a more mature turn for its third outing. Charlie’s struggles with anorexia and OCD worsen, leading him to check into a clinic. He gets the help he needs and eventually returns to school.
Later, he and Nick make their relationship sexual. Meanwhile, Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao) are contemplating doing the same. Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) are also trying to navigate how much space they need from each other, while Tara is also contending with academic pressure.
