As if The Last of Us hadn’t already devastated fans enough with last week’s fatal twist. Now the show’s creators are rubbing salt in the very raw wounds of viewers.

For fans of the original video game series, episode two of season two will not have come as a surprise. SPOILER ALERT for anyone who is still yet to catch up, but Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller meets a harrowing end.

The Last of Us Doubles Down on Heartbreak

The brutality of Joel’s murder, at the hands of a vengeful Abby, was no less traumatic for those in the know about the twist. And for those with no prior knowledge of how the show would play out, it was a tortuous twist that serves as one of the most shocking deaths in television history.

So, a week removed from Joel’s brutal, blood soaked demise in front of a tormented Ellie, The Last of Us fans were then subjected to further heartbreak.

As the opening credits rolled, viewers noted some not so subtle differences. For one, Pascal’s name was now absent. But perhaps most devastating of all, the two silhouettes, representing Joel and Ellie, are now just one. The smaller silhouette, belonging to Ellie, is now all alone to face a dangerous world solo.

Fans React on Social Media

Naturally, social media was a whirlwind of emotions when the realisation of what had changed dawned on viewers.

Anyway, don’t mind us, just off to have an enormous cry while we wait for whatever next week has to emotionally destroy us with.
