O’Brien’s sibling, Julz O’Brien, 35, commented on a post about their brother, which has since gone viral. In the media recently, there has been a lot of talk about transgender rights and laws surrounding them. The Last of Us Star Pedro Pascal recently condemned Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling for her comments on a new UK transgender law. Pascal, 50, called the author, 59, a “heinous loser”.

A resurfaced interview of O’Brien saying he was “grateful” to have a transgender sibling was blasted by his sibling, Julz O’Brien. They posted in the comment section of a post by the Gay Times that they haven’t heard from him in “over a year”.

In his interview with Vulture in January 2024, O’Brien said, “I have a trans, nonbinary sibling. I know people in my personal life as well who are queer and I am so grateful for how much it deepens my experience in this world.”
While promoting his movie Ponyboi, where the lead is a gender-nonconforming character, he said this.
What did Julz O’Brien say?
His sibling was quick to blast him in the comment section.
In a comment, O’Brien wrote: “He didn’t check in when I had top surgery,” Julz wrote in the Instagram comment.
They continued, “He didn’t even wish me happy b-day last week! But glad I could deepen his experience in this world and make the world love him that much more.”
Furthermore, the 35-year-old condemned their brother for referring to them as “non-binary” rather than transmasculine.
“I’m actually trans masc and go by he/they pronouns 🫶🏼😌,” O’Brien wrote in another comment.
Furthermore, O’Brien said in another comment, “Kinda funny that this article didn’t ask me a single thing about myself? It’s about me and uses my photo. I’m not even tagged.”

Dating back to 2023, it appears the siblings were close, as Julz posted a birthday shout-out for their brother.
