Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin in Stranger Things – has claimed that the show should have killed off more characters in its first four seasons.

Matarazzo made the claim at MEGACON Orlando. “It might sound messed up but we should kill more people,” he said. “This show would be so much better if the stakes were much higher, like at any moment any of these kids can kick it. I feel like we’re all too safe.”

While many of the main cast have managed to survive all four seasons of peril, the writers haven’t been afraid to wield the axe – witness the demise of fan favourite Eddie Munson in the fourth season. Max too died in the finale of season four – although she was subsequently brought back to life.

Some have speculated that Matarazzo is hinting that the fifth and final season of the Netflix drama could be more dangerous for the main characters and that some might not make it through to the end.

The end of season four hinted at what is in store for the residents of Hawkins in season five: the sky darkened over the town, while fragments of the Upside Down fell to the ground, with nearby flowers starting to decay.

Vecna is sure to be heavily involved in whatever happens – although few details have been released so far. We do know that the first episode will be called ‘The Crawl’, and that more will be revealed about the Upside Down over the course of the season.

Will the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, take the show down a darker road? We’re going to have to wait to find out. The final season is currently being filmed and a release date hasn’t yet been announced but it is not expected to drop until 2025.
