An activist known as the ‘pro-life Spider-Man’ has been arrested after climbing to the top of the Sphere in Las Vegas.
Maison Des Champs was apprehended by the police after the stunt, which he says he did to raise money for a homeless pregnant woman. The Sphere, opened last year, has quickly become an iconic part of the Vegas skyline for its ability to project images onto it.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department posted on X (previously Twitter) to confirm that an individual had been taken into custody without further incident.
Des Champs posted a video of his climb on Facebook, along with an explanation for the stunt. His Instagram account (prolife.spiderman) says he is known for climbing buildings to raise money for women in crisis pregnancies. He is also known for being anti-abortion.
He has previously climbed the Aria Hotel on the Las Vegas strip in 2021 – and was arrested for that. He has also scaled the Devon Tower in Oklahoma City and Accenture Tower in Chicago – each time to raise money for women in crisis pregnancy situations.
The incident has added profile as it comes in Super Bowl week. Las Vegas will host Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday between the San Francisco 49s and Kansas City Chiefs at the Allegiant Stadium, which will be one of the most-watched events on television in the US, as well as attracting hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill referenced the incident at a press conference, saying that they are aware people are “going to try things” during the Super Bowl week. “We know these things are going to happen, and we’re going to deal with them as they come up and make sure we have the safest Super Bowl we’ve ever had,” he said.
