Forget burgers, Happy Meals and McFlurries, it’s the coffee that many McDonalds fans are really obsessed with.

According to Reddit, many drive-through fanatics swear by the Golden Arches’ signature brew, with lots of fans admitting that it’s tastier than anything they can whip up at home.

Others have suggested McDonalds’ $1 coffee is better than other cups on the market too. “Why is McDonald’s coffee almost always better tasting than just about anything I buy and brew myself,” asked one Reddit user

His fellow posters wasted no time sharing their thoughts.

“I’ve had enough McCafe to KNOW it tastes better than what I make at home,” said one commenter who added that they regularly buy coffee from fast food venues.

“I’m convinced there are good batches and bad batches. And McDonald may have a lock on a source of the good stuff. Their pockets are deep enough and they must buy in such volume that they can cut a deal on the good stuff. That’s always been my working theory.”

“Can’t beat it for the price,” added another poster, with a third adding “the secrets out. McDonald’s 1$ coffee is the best coffee in the world.”

Keen to figure out what makes McD’s $1 coffee so great, the outlet Food & Wine decided to ask a bonafide McDonalds’ chef what the key to it was. Turns out, it’s a focus on the “little things” that makes it so great.

“At McDonald’s, we’re focusing on making sure the little things are done right and leveraging great partnerships to ensure we are selecting the best beans for our blends and roast levels to bring out that great flavor,” chef Mike Lingo told the outlet.

“For our coffee, we use 100% Arabica coffee beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms or farms participating in our McCafé Sustainability Improvement Platform (SIP) program — it is a special blend made just for McCafé, a medium-dark roast with a full body, fruity, floral, and chocolate notes.”

That means that you can only get McCafe coffee at McDonalds – which may explain why caffeine fans can’t find a similar hit anywhere else.

“We pay attention to the details while we brew”

While making sure to grind all of its coffee on-site to avoid any unnecessary degradation, Lingo explained that McDonalds’ even pays attention to the kit used to brew each coffee.

“We pay attention to the details while we brew,” he added, “from the quality of our roast and selection of our beans to the equipment we use.”

Turns out, Lingo isn’t shocked by how much McDonalds fans love this particular brew. “I’m never surprised how much they love our McCafé beverages; they are delicious and affordable for our consumers,” he added. “They can feel good about our pledge to sustainability as well. We love to hear the stories of people’s memories and experiences with our coffee.”
