The summer saw some great movies drop in the theater, but as we head into autumn there are plenty more coming. Here are six we are most excited to see.
As usual, the summer saw some huge blockbuster movies released – including Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which has become the year’s top-grossing movie so far – as well as interesting independent movies.
Now, as we move into autumn, Hollywood is showing no sign of slowing down its pace of exciting movie releases.
Attendances at theaters have been on the up recently and with good reason when there are movies as good as this coming out. Here are six we are excited to see in September.
Fall 2: Deadpoint
This one isn’t for the faint-hearted or those with a fear of heights. The follow-up to 2022’s Fall, this time the action focuses on Shiloh Hunter’s sister Jax. After Shiloh’s death, his friend Luce suggests to Jax taking on a trip in his memory. Jax agrees, and the pair travel to Thailand to take on a treacherous mountain path. After the events of Fall, you might think they would have been put off challenges at height, but no. Inevitably, something goes wrong and the pair are left at a height of 3,000 feet and must cooperate to stay alive. Drops (if that’s the right word) in theaters on September 2.
Runner
This comedy thriller teams up Alan Ritchson – best known for playing Jack Reacher in recent years – and Owen Wilson. The plot sees a delivery man tasked with bringing a healthy liver to a sick girl. But the task isn’t as easy as it should be and he ends up having to escort the man who bought the liver, while escaping the clutches of mercenaries who want that liver for their own ends. Expect chases and explosions aplenty. In theaters from September 11.
Resident Evil
The Resident Evil movie franchise is now on its second reboot with this movie, which is the eighth in the series overall. This movie is based on the events in the Resident Evil 2 video game, although the action is updated from 1998 to the present day.
The plot follows a medical courier – odd that this is the second movie released this month to focus on a medical courier – who must fight off a succession of infected monsters in Raccoon City to successfully deliver his load. Out on September 18.
The Uprising
The Uprising is a period drama, that tells the story of the 1381 Peasants Revolt in England. Andrew Garfield stars as a ploughman who leads a rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II. As war burns across England, he forms an army of people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice and survival. Jamie Bell also starts, alongside Tom Hollander, Tomasin McKenzie and Jonny Lee Miller.
Onslaught
Returning to the theme of staying alive and fighting off terrifying threats, Onslaught arrives in theaters on September 4. Here, an army sniper struggles to protect her young daughter from an army of genetically engineered super soldiers who escaped from a secret military facility and are killing everything in their path. Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens and Eric Wareheim lead the cast.
Practical Magic 2
The sequel to the much-loved original from 1998 is based on a follow-up novel from 2021. Stars of the original movie including Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Sandra Bullock and Diane Wiesl return, alongside newcomers including Maisie Williams, Lee Pace and Joey King.
The action is set 25 years after the events of the original movie and sees the Owens family face a new crisis when a discovery regarding the family’s history and the origins of their magic comes to light. When Sally’s daughter begins to uncover hidden family secrets and develops her own dark abilities, the family is plunged into a multi-generational struggle to finally break the curse that has haunted their lineage for centuries.
