September is traditionally the time when TV networks bring back their big shows and debut new ones – and that is still in evidence this month.
When the summer is over, and everyone is back in work and school, and the weather starts to get colder, this is time when people look to stay in and find a good show to watch or, increasingly these days, binge.
September was the traditional month for big returning shows or the debut of new ones, and while streaming services may break many TV traditions, this is one they don’t. there are plenty of shows for everyone this month, from horror to drama to romance – here are the ones we are most excited about.
The Gentlemen season 2
Guy Ritchie’s comedy-drama about upper class drug dealing in England gets its second season. This time, Duke Eddie Horniman (Theo James) is embracing being the head of a marijuana empire as the drama expands its themes and geography – the action spans the English countryside and Italian lakes.
But with the growth of the empire comes more and new dangers, as well as a host of enigmatic new characters, but with the standard Guy Ritchie-isms fans love. See it on Netflix from September 2.
The Paper season 2
This comedy, set in The Office universe, is back for a second season of fly-on-the-wall action. At the end of the first season, The Toledo Truth-Teller won a journalism award, and the action picks up after that – how will success affect the team?
Alongside the usual workplace awkwardness and battle to save a struggling newspaper, Ned Sampson (Domhnall Gleeson) is looking for his next big story, while Mare Pritti tries to deal with her feelings for him. We also have the return of Oscar Martinez, who fans know from The Office. Season starts on September 9.
Neagley
Another spinoff debuts this month on Prime Video with the debut of Neagley. This is a spinoff from Reacher, which recently aired its fourth season. Here, Frances Neagley, Jack Reacher’s long-standing friend, goes off on her own adventure, investigating the death of a friend, who died in a suspicious car crash. Of course, all is not as simple as it first seems. Will Reacher also make an appearance at some point? It’s not unheard of in spinoffs… Find out from September 16.
Slow Horses season 6
Everyone’s favourite bunch of outcast spies return for a sixth season on Apple TV. This is the first season without creator Will Smith at the helm, with Gaby Chiappe taking over. Whether this means there is an appreciable change of direction remains to be seen. However, Gary Oldman still leads the cast as Jackson Lamb, and there will no doubt be more cases of national importance that they end up involved in. The return of Sid Baker (Olivia Cooke) will also be explored. Episodes start to drop on September 16.
Mobland season 2
London-based gangster thriller Mobland returns for a second season on Paramount this month. It follows the story of a family trying to gain power in London’s criminal underworld, with action and violence aplenty. But what sets this series apart is its stacked cast, including bona fide Hollywood stars such as Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren. Starts on September 18.
Brothers
There is a long-standing joke on the internet that Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are brothers. Somewhere, in a writers room, someone thought it would be a good idea to explore what would happen if that were true and ran with the idea. So in this meta-comedy we get Woody and Matthew playing versions of themselves in an alternate reality where they find out they are actually brothers. What does this mean for the pair? Will drama and/or hilarity ensure? Tune in to Apple TV on September 23 to find out.
