A new Star Wars trilogy continuing the Skywalker dynasty is moving closer to production – here is all we know about it.
Star Wars celebrates its 50th anniversary next year, and it seems there is plenty of life left in the franchise with a new trilogy in the main series moving closer to production, which will delight fans across the world.
While it was thought for some years that the Skywalker Saga was over after the ninth movie in the series was released in 2019, it now seems likely that another three are coming our way with Lucasfilm and Disney planning another trilogy.
An initial announcement was made back in 2024, but now with the addition of a director to the project, the movies are getting closer to production. Here is all we know about the new Star Wars trilogy.
Who is directing the new Star Wars movie?
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jon Watts has been attached to direct the first of the planned three new movies.
This will come as welcome news as Jon is no stranger to the Star Wars universe. Jon wrote, produced and directed the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, which hit screens in 2024. The series, which was well regarded by critics and fans, failed to be recommissioned for a second series.
Jon also has plenty of experience handling new movies of a beloved IP with passionate fans, having directed all three of the Spider-Man trilogy movies in the MCU – Homecoming, Far from Home and No Way Home, which were huge hits at the box office, and have become fan favourites.
Who is writing the new Star Wars movies?
The new trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, something which was announced in 2024.
Simon has quite some pedigree, within and without the Star Wars universe. With Star Wars, Simon co-created the animated Star Wars: Rebels series, and he was also a consultant on the seventh film in the main movie series, The Force Awakens.
Elsewhere, Simon has written several X-Men movies over the years, so he is well acquainted with telling blockbuster stories.
What is the plot of the new Star Wars movie?
Details of the plot of the new trilogy are very thin on the ground thus far. What we do know is that the movie will continue the story from the ninth episode in the series, 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker
It is also expected that Rey Skywalker – played by Daisy Ridley – will return in the new movies, but whether she will be the focus of the movies is unclear. Whether any other characters will be returning too has neither been confirmed or denied.
What is next in the Star Wars universe?
While the new trilogy is potentially still far, far away, fans don’t have too long to wait for a new movie in the Star Wars universe. Starfighter, which stars Ryan Gosling, will be in theaters on May 27, 2027, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the franchise.
The original Star Wars movie, A New Hope, will also return to theaters next year as part of the milestone celebrations.
When will we see the new Star Wars movies in the theater?
That is a good question. The project is officially still in development and apparently hasn’t been formally greenlit by Disney yet, although the addition of a director to the project suggests it is progressing towards that milestone. Disney has remained tight-lipped following the news of Jon’s attachment to the project.
So if or when we might get to see a new movie is still guesswork. Even if the movie is greenlit soon, it will take time to cast then shoot, and, given the amount of CGI that will be involved, post-production and editing will also take some time. A release could be before the end of the decade.
