More than eight years after the second Sicario movie hit theaters, it has been announced that a third movie in the gritty thriller series is in the works.

The first Sicario film was released in 2015 and its success helped to catapult Denis Villeneuve into the A-list of Hollywood directors. The movie, which didn’t have a big budget by today’s standards, was a success and spawned a sequel in 2018, Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The second movie also performed well at the box office.

Since then, the movies have remained popular on streaming services, and both have good scores on Rotten Tomatoes – Sicario’s is 91% and the sequel is 62% at the time of writing.

Deadline has revealed that Sicario 3 is in the works and will bring back a much-missed character, which is sure to excite fans.

Here is all we know about Sicario 3.

Who is in Sicario 3?

For Sicario 3, the makers are getting the original band back together. The first movie starred Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. Emily starred as FBI agent Kate Macer, who is seconded to a covert Department of Defense team, who are on the trail of a ruthless Mexican drug cartel.

In the DoD team Kate meets CIA operative Matt Graver (Josh), who leads the team and has an attitude that ‘the ends justifies the means’ – greenlighting some pretty shocking acts. Also in the team is Alejandro (Benicio), who turns out to be a sicario – or hitman.

However, for the sequel, only Josh and Benicio’s characters returned, and the nature of the movie changed, with the action focused on a false flag operation that goes wrong – but with a redemption arc of sorts for Alejandro who tries to save a young girl.

Other names have yet to be announced, but will come as the movie moves closer to shooting,

Who is writing and directing Sicario 3?

Stephen Knight – best known for penning the Peaky Blinders series and movie that ran on Netflix – has drafted the script. According to Deadline, the strength of the draft was enough to convince the original three stars to sign up for the threequel.

Meanwhile Padraic McKinley will be in the director’s chair for this movie, having come through a rigorous selection process from the production companies. He is best known for period drama The Weight, which is currently in theaters starring Ethan Hawke.

Stephen and Padraic are currently working on finalising the script.

However, Taylor Sheridan, who created the Sicario franchise, is not believed to be involved in this third movie. He has latterly gone on to create shows such as Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown.

What is the plot of Sicario 3?

As is usual these days, the plot of Sicario 3 is being kept under wraps for now. However, it is likely to follow the events of Day of the Soldado. However, with the return of Kate, it might signal a return to the type of gritty thriller that characterised the original movie, rather than the sequel that ramped up the action and dialled down the moral compass that Kate provided.

An interesting plot point will be how Kate is reintegrated into the team, having been completely absent in the last movie.

When will Sicario 3 be in theaters?

No release date has yet been announced. It is hoped that filming for Sicario 3 will begin early next year. This should mean that the film should hit screens by early 2028.
