The trailer for the much-anticipated Borderlands film has dropped – and it looks like its going to be a lot of fun.
Based on the best-selling video game series of the same name, Borderlands has been in development for some years, but it seems the wait will be worth it, if the trailer is anything to go by.
The trailer sets up some major plot points – such as the search for treasure hidden in a vault on Pandora, “the weirdest, most dangerous, dumpster fire of a planet,” according to the main protagonist Lilith. “If you go hunting for it, you’d better take all the help you can get,” she adds in voiceover.
So she assembles a crew of misfits (aren’t they always?) to take on the planet and find the vault. Explosions, violence and adventure ensue.
The cast for Borderlands is an epic one. Cate Blanchette stars as Lilith, the outlaw with a mysterious past. Kevin Hart plays Roland, a former mercenary looking for redemption, Ariana Greenblatt is Tiny Tina, a pre-teen demolitionist, while Florian Munteanu is Krieg, her protector. Meanwhile Hollywood royalty, Jamie Lee Curtis, puts in a turn as Dr Tannis, a scientist who has a passing relationship with sanity.
Meanwhile Jack Black voices Claptrap, a wise-cracking robot, who will no doubt steal most of the scenes he appears in.
Borderlands is directed by Eli Roth, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Crombie, based on the video game series. Borderlands is a first-person shooter set in an open world where players hunt for the fabled vault. There have been six games in the series since the original was launched in 2009.
As you might expect, there are a lot of explosions, guns, cartoon violence and witty one-liners. So if you are a fan of the original games, or of sci-fi action comedies in general, then this could be the film for you.
Borderlands drops in cinemas on August 9.
