The shirt worn by soccer star Lionel Messi is set to become kit manufacturer Adidas’ bestselling jersey of any sport in the world, it has been claimed.
Major League Soccer (MLS) commissioner, Don Garber, made the claim in an interview with sports website The Athletic. While Adidas have not confirmed this statement, it is well known that Messi’s Inter Miami shirt has sold in huge numbers since it was released last year.
The MLS said that the Argentinian superstar’s jersey was the league’s best-seller in 2023, despite Messi only joining Inter Miami in July of that year from Paris St-Germain in France.
Back in 2023, it was also reported that Adidas received 500,000 requests for the pink number 10 shirt within days of his unveiling in Miami and, at one point in the late summer, was selling jerseys faster than it could produce them.
Also last summer, when Messi mania first hit the US, sports apparel retailer Fanatics said it sold more Messi jerseys than not just for any other soccer player, but athlete of any sport, apart from American Football star Jalen Hurts.
Messi has long been one of the world’s most popular players, ever since he emerged as a teenager at Barcelona nearly 20 years ago. His exploits for Barcelona, Paris St-Germain, Inter Miami and, on the international stage, for Argentina, have captivated fans around the world. He has won eight Balon d’Or awards for the world’s best player in a year and holds the record for most international goals scored by a South American male.
