- Legendary Studios has confirmed that third instalment of the Dune series is in development
- Denis Villeneuve is already working on a script
- Dune: Part Two is one of the biggest grossing films of 2024 so far at the worldwide box office

Legendary Studios has confirmed that it is developing a third instalment of the Dune series, and that a script is already being written.
Dune: Part Two has been one of the biggest cinematic hits of the year so far, so fans will be excited at the news. Dune: Part Two took $182.5 million at the global box office on its opening weekend, which has been surpassed only by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which took $194 million, according to Variety.
Denis Villeneuve is currently writing the script for Dune Three, which will be based on Frank Herbert’s book, Dune Messiah. He had said in previous interviews that he wanted to adapt the second novel in the Dune series into a film – as well as that he always envisaged that the movies would form a trilogy.
However, Villeneuve also said just after the launch of Dune: Part Two that he would only make a third part if it would be better than Part Two. Given how successful the film has been among critics and theater goers alike, the script will have to be good.
This is one note of caution for Dune fans – if Villeneuve isn’t confident with the material, or if his creative team have the resources to adapt it as they want, it may not happen.
A third film also hasn’t been officially green lit by Warner Bros yet. But given the critical and box office success of the films so far, it seems inevitable that it will be at some point in the not-too-distant future.
In terms of timing, 2027 has been mooted as the year the film may drop, as Villeneuve has indicated he wants to complete another film before going back to Dune.
