Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr has said that he would happily reprise his iconic role in the future.

Speaking to Esquire magazine, he said he would “happily” return to the MCU in the future, adding that the Iron Man role was close to his heart. “It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me,” he added.

He also spoke highly about the franchise, which has come in for criticism recently, with some of the films underperforming at the box office and receiving lukewarm reviews from critics, and its future prospects. “I always say, ‘never, ever bet against Kevin Feige’. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”

Downey Jr first played the part of genius billionaire entrepreneur Tony Stark, who creates the Iron Man suit, in 2008’s Iron Man. He then appeared in multiple films in the MCU, not only the Iron Man trilogy, but also the Avengers films, as well as popping up for cameos in others, culminating in Avengers: Endgame where (spoiler alert) his character perishes.

However, as any follower of the Marvel comics – and comics in general – knows, death isn’t always the end. On many occasions, characters have been brought back from the dead, so it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Downey Jr could get to don the armor once more.

Currently, there has been no word on if Iron Man could come back, so it would seem unlikely he would make it into the multiverse saga, the current phase of the MCU.

Downey Jr has been busy since Endgame, most recently picking up the best supporting actor Oscar for his work on Oppenheimer.
