- James Gunn confirms iconic villain will be main antagonist in latest Superman film
- Director took to Threads to quash rumors that other villains would be taking center stage in the film
- Superman is set to be released in July 2025

Iconic villain Lex Luthor will be the main antagonist in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, the director has confirmed.
After months of rumors online about which of the lengthy roster of villains Superman would battle in the upcoming film – Ultraman was a name that kept cropping up – Gunn himself took to Threads to quash the speculation. He wrote: “The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this.”
Gunn added that there were many stories coming out daily about the film that he had to devote attention to striking down. “So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)” he added.
Gunn added that the movie is progressing as filming has been ongoing for about a month – “about 18% complete” he said – teasing that “I’m almost ready to show it to you”.
The film, now just titled Superman, is one of the centrepieces of the upcoming rebooted DCU, which Gunn is at the helm of. It will focus on Superman’s journey to reconcile his heritage on Krypton with his human upbringing – based much on famous comic book arcs.
David Coronswet will be donning the figure-hugging blue suit as the titular hero with Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of Lex Luthor. Rachel Brosnahan will be Lois Lane.
The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025, across the world.
