The birds are back – again. After years of waiting, it has been announced that an Angry Birds 3 movie is in production and familiar names are already on board for it.

Confirmed returns

Rovio, Sega and Prime Focus Studios made the announcement in a press release. In good news for fans, Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad – who voiced Red and Chuck in the first two films – are on board to reprise their roles.

There are other returnees confirmed, such as John Rice, who, having co-directed the previous film, is set to take sole directorship this time around. Meanwhile, his erstwhile co-director, Thurop Van Orman, will be penning the script this time around.

While the third instalment of the franchise will “following the continuing adventures of Red and Chuck” no other plot details have been given.

“We believe that the upcoming The Angry Birds Movie 3… presents a great opportunity for us to bring the charm of the Angry Birds brand to fans across the globe,” said Shuji Utsumi, president and COO at Sega.

Successful franchise

The first Angry Birds film, very loosely based on the hugely successful mobile games, was released in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2019. Combined, the films have taken more than $500 million at the global box office.

This will be the first film outing for the Angry Birds since Rovio was acquired by Sega last year. Whether this franchise will now follow a similar trajectory to Sonic the Hedgehog – spinoff series etc – remains to be seen.

Currently, no release date has been announced for the film, and nor was a distributor – Sony Pictures fulfilled that role for the first two films – so it may be some time before it hits theaters..
