- Cowell on the look out to find a new boyband to rival One Direction
- This time it’ll be retro style – away from the X Factor media circus
- Cowell won’t be looking online for his new talent, claiming social media stars are fake

Filthy rich music mogul Simon Cowell is out to find a new boyband to rival One Direction – arguably the biggest and only long-lasting success story to emerge from the X Factor treadmill.
Dubbed “Simon’s New Direction” by witty online commentators, Cowell wants his new protégé’s to be the next global sensation to rival his beloved One Direction.
Worth a cool $600 million
This time around Cowell – worth a cool $600 million – is going old school on us. Retro style, in the words of the great man. To find this new fab five, he’ll be checking out karaoke bars, school gymnasiums and even grannies’ bingo halls.
It’s a back-to-basics approach light years away from the happycry circus of the X Factor factory.
No more X Factor circus
Cowell confirmed to the PA press agency he’s going old school this time, no more pyrotechnics, fancy editing and sob stories to get an uninterested viewing audience to vote.
And Cowell won’t be looking online for his new talent, dismissing artists who find fame on Instagram and TikTok as talentless fraudsters.
“You can’t fake this,” Cowell said. “I’m only interested in people who want to show up and tell us why they want to do this.”
“Posting videos in your bedroom, it’s not enough and I’m trying to prove a point here that to succeed in the music business, you got to get up, you’ve got to turn up, you’ve got to show up.”
Given that almost no Gen Z’s in America or the UK watch terrestrial TV, or care about his ancient X Factor success stories, many are predicting that – like the “fake” acts on TikTok – few people will get up and turn up to watch his new show.
Not so much a New Direction and more a Lack of Direction.
