The wait might have been long, but it seems that fans will get to see the hugely anticipated second season of Squid Game later this year.

While an official announcement has yet to be made by Netflix, the show’s star, Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-Hun, has said in recent interviews that it will be released in December.

Global phenomenon

The first season of the Korean-language show by Hwang Dong-hyuk was a global sensation when it dropped in September 2021, with viewers being captivated by the story of Gi-Hun and his fight to stay alive in the battle-to-the-death that is the Squid Game. The Squid Game is a secret contest where 456 players, all of whom are in deep financial trouble, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win huge cash prize – the red light/green light game being one of the most memorable.

The second season was filmed in 2023 and is now being edited. Fans were treated to a first look at the second season in February, where the action seems to pick up after the conclusion of the first season – with Gi-Hun on a mission of his own this time round. He is shown delivering a Liam Neeson-like warning to an unseen foe: “I will find you. No matter what it takes.”

Few plot details

Other plot details have been scarce since then, but Dong-hyuk has said that the new season will feature “new games”, so it looks likely that another iteration of the Squid Games will feature in it.

There are also rumors that there will be a third season of Squid Games too, so watch this space.
