It has been confirmed: in 2026, we are going back to Far, Far Away as a new Shrek movie has been confirmed.
Details confirmed
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) Dreamworks Animation confirmed some crucial details about the upcoming film. “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”
Now we have a date, but confirmation that the voice actors for Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona are all returning.
When Shrek 5 debuts at theaters, it will be more than 15 years since the last Shrek film, 2010’s Shrek Forever After. There have been two Puss In Boots spinoff films in the interim period, which have kept fans sated.
Murphy quotes confirmed
The post also confirms what Eddie Murphy said in a recent interview about the progress of a new Shrek movie.
In an interview with Collider to promote Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy said that he has already recorded some dialogue for the new Shrek film. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up,” he said.
Murphy also said that a spinoff film focusing on Donkey was also in the works, but this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Shrek is one of the biggest animated franchises of the 21st century, with the four films having grossed more than $1.2 billion globally, according to Box Office Mojo figures. DreamWorks will also be re-releasing Shrek in theaters later this year to coincide with its 20th anniversary.
